was born and raised in Mexico City or Ciudad de Mexico (CDMX), and is the youngest of 11 children. His parents migrated to Mexico City from Tehuantepec, Oaxaca before he was born, but they carried the culture and food that is Oaxaca. This blend of regions is seen throughout the menu at La Ciudad.
Hugo is a self taught chef, and his main inspiration stems from childhood memories in the family kitchen with his mother. Hugo’s dishes are clean, crisp, and are made with great passion, much like his mother, Carmen. His flavors are rich and bold, and are a modern twist on both the Mexican Street Food of Mexico City and the traditional foods of Oaxaca.
Hugo has worked in the Chicago food and beverage industry for over 20 years. His experience includes both front and back of the house, to management and now, business owner. His engaging personality and his passion for excellence service is immediately felt when you enter his restaurant; patrons often comment about feeling like they have just became part of a wonderful family. He takes pride in remembering each and every person that enters his establishment and treats each guest as if they were the only ones in the room. His attentiveness to detail is seen within the restaurant, his employees, and his menu.
His passion for excellent service and great food have brought him to where he is today – fulfilling a lifelong dream of opening his own restaurant. La Ciudad is often referred to as “The Hidden Gem of Uptown”; once you enter, you will feel transformed into this high energy and positive atmosphere.
